Safety & Engineering

Maximum safety, total confidence

Subaru’s number one priority is your number one priority: keeping everyone safe under all conditions, at all times. That’s why the Subaru Tribeca earns a Top Safety Pick* by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, year after year. All our vehicles come equipped with advanced active and passive safety systems that help avoid accidents and protect your passengers. We’re dedicated to superior safety engineering so you can drive with confidence.

Ready for the unexpected

The best way to survive an accident is to avoid one. For a mid-sized SUV, the Tribeca’s class-leading, active safety systems deliver superior agility and evasive capabilities. If the unexpected happens, Subaru’s all-wheel drive, advanced stability control, and antilock brakes will help to keep you in control and steer clear of danger.
Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) Take corners in all conditions with confidence. The Tribeca comes standard with the Subaru VDC (VDC is also known as electronic stability control) system that uses electronic sensors to monitor and analyze your vehicle’s stability at all times. If necessary, the system will automatically adjust the AWD torque distribution, engine output, and brakes at each wheel to keep you on course.
Braking Systems The Tribeca takes the panic out of braking. Every vehicle comes with Subaru’s advanced 4-wheel, 4-channel, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) for enhanced anti-skid protection. Electronic Brake-force Distribution automatically adjusts front/rear brake pressure for consistent performance when your vehicle’s load changes. The Brake Override cuts engine power when your brakes and accelerator are applied simultaneously and Brake Assist provides greater force when you need it most.

Protection when you need it

If an accident is unavoidable, the Tribeca’s advanced passive safety systems deliver unparalleled protection. This SUV is engineered with exceptionally rigid construction and bolstered with a full complement of airbags. Superior seat and head restraints and collapsible steering wheel and pedals combine to provide 360 degrees of protection and peace of mind.
Airbags With Subaru, superior safety is never an option, especially when it comes to the first line of defense in an accident: the Tribeca comes standard with 6 airbags. Dual-stage deployment front airbags and front seat-mounted, side impact airbags are complemented by full, side curtain airbags with roll-over sensors.
Seats and Belts Subaru seats keep you comfortable and safe. Designed to provide support and absorb impact energy, your Tribeca front seats feature active head restraints that move forward to offset whiplash in a rear-end collision. Height adjustable front seatbelts with pretensioners hold passengers in place, while load limiters reduce pressure on the chest. 3-point belts for all 5 seats in the back. And, young passengers riding in child safety seats are protected by the ISO-FIX/LATCH system.
Advanced Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frame Standard with every Tribeca, the advanced ring-shaped reinforcement frame is a proprietary Subaru design. The frame reinforces the entire cabin by linking the roof to the side pillars and the floor, directing impact energy away from passengers. Strategically positioned door beams absorb side impacts and a front crumple zone enables the engine to slide down under the cabin in a head-on collision — further improving the crash worthiness of this vehicle.

Engineered for an, incredible drive

Drive this versatile, 7-passenger SUV and experience the pleasure and confidence that come with the precise handling and dynamic performance that define all Subaru vehicles. At its heart, the SUBARU BOXER engine efficiently pumps out power directly to all four wheels via Subaru’s symmetrical full-time AWD, providing maximum traction in all conditions. At the same time, the independent suspension system keeps your drive nimble and your passengers comfortable.
The Effortless SUBARU BOXER Engine Built with the largest SUBARU BOXER engine in the fleet, the Tribeca delivers silky-smooth acceleration with very powerful response. This 3.6L 6-cylinder engine easily generates 256 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque but keeps a low profile to deliver superior cornering and precision steering. Dual Active Valve Control technology boosts low- to mid-range torque for quick power delivery. The engine’s horizontal configuration and symmetrical position along the drivetrain delivers maximum power to the AWD system. All this muscle comes with low emissions and respectable fuel efficiency. The only thing regular about this engine is the regular unleaded fuel it takes.

Transmissions + Symmetrical AWD

The Tribeca comes standard with an advanced 5-speed automatic transmission for smooth acceleration, efficient power delivery, and a sporty feel. It’s perfectly calibrated to work with an advanced Subaru symmetrical full-time AWD system for superior traction in all conditions. All you have to do is enjoy the ride.

5-speed Automatic Transmission (5EAT)

Use the Tribeca’s transmission to customize your drive. Choose from 2 fully-automatic shift modes: Normal for fuel economy and Sport for better response. Or better yet, take more control over the vehicle's performance with manual shift mode enhanced with automatic blipping control for smoother downshifts. Tribeca will also do some of the thinking for you: the transmission is linked to a variable torque AWD system that distributes more power to the rear for a sportier feel in normal conditions and automatically equalizes power for better traction as conditions warrant.

Tough chassis, superior ride

Go ahead. Take your Tribeca over rougher terrain. Its rock-solid chassis is light and exceptionally rigid, delivering outstanding stability and remarkable agility. Keeping everything tight and controlled to boost overall handling and comfort, the Tribeca chassis is designed to enhance the vehicle’s 4-wheel independent suspension for long trips and pleasurable rides.
Front Suspension It’s great to feel the road, but only to a certain point: a principle embodied by the Tribeca’s MacPherson strut-type front suspension system. Offering exceptional comfort, safety, and handling, this system is both robust and absorbent, smoothing the rough patches and reducing vibration. A small turning circle, wide track and generous ground clearance (211mm) add to the Tribeca’s outstanding agility and well-rounded versatility.
Rear Suspension The double-wishbone rear suspension in the Tribeca is engineered with a flat, compact design to better control wheel tilt and significantly increase stability. This vehicle hugs sharp corners and holds the ground, giving you a greater level of confidence and control while handling all manner of roads. The rear suspension’s design also frees up space in the cargo area. The end result? More versatility, greater safety and a sportier drive.
