I am often asked which vehicle I recommend for small families who love adventure and prioritize safety. In this particular case, I always have the same name in mind, and that is the Subaru Forester. Year after year, it is a vehicle that never ceases to surprise me. It is spacious, comfortable, and boasts a plethora of advanced technologies. However, where the Forester clearly stands out from the competition is in terms of traction. Its all-wheel-drive system is among the most effective on the planet. This is the kind of thing that makes all the difference when venturing off the beaten path or facing the worst road conditions.

The Japanese manufacturer's SUV does not receive any major updates in 2024, but that's far from a bad thing as it remains up to date. It is also what allows it to offer one of the best value for money in its category.

Range and Prices

The Subaru Forester 2024 is available in 6 different configurations, starting with the base version with a starting price of $34,563. This version offers a comprehensive standard equipment that even includes the EyeSight technology suite. Next is the Touring version at $39,463 with improved comfort. The Sport version offers a more interesting look with a starting price of $40,864. However, I much prefer the Wilderness version visually, especially with its unique colors. The Wilderness version is priced at $43,063. The Limited version offers a more luxurious experience at $43,863. Finally, the Premier version tops the range with a starting price of $45,163.

Category and Competition

The Subaru Forester 2024 belongs to the compact SUV category for the general public, nothing less than the segment where the competition is the fiercest. Fortunately, the Japanese manufacturer's SUV has strong arguments in its favor, especially in terms of off-road driving and versatility. It may not be among the most popular models in its category, but it deserves careful consideration.

Rivals: Chevrolet Equinox, Dodge Hornet, Ford Bronco Sport, Ford Escape, GMC Terrain, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Compass, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5, Mazda CX-50, Mitsubishi Outlander, Nissan Rogue, Toyota Rav4, Volkswagen Tiguan

Design and Technologies

Personally, I find that there are too many strong resemblances among SUVs today, which is why I appreciate the Forester. It stands out visually and offers a more interesting design. Subaru has also opted for a palette of less common colors, making the Forester even more appealing. I also really like certain elements such as its C-shaped headlights and taillights, giving it a unique aesthetic signature.

The Japanese manufacturer has done an excellent job with the interior, featuring flawless finishing and high-quality materials. The assembly feels meticulous, and I appreciate the model's ergonomics. The Forester offers one of the most spacious cabins in its category.

In terms of interior technologies, the Forester's multimedia system is particularly noteworthy. It is intuitive, and its navigation is smooth. The only thing that slightly bothers me is the background image that gives the impression that the screen is always dirty.

Performance

The Subaru Forester 2024 offers only one mechanical option, a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. It delivers 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque, which is more than sufficient for an SUV in its category. However, it's worth noting that enthusiasts might miss the turbocharged engine under the Forester's hood, especially considering models like the Outback and WRX have it. As for the transmission, the Japanese manufacturer's SUV features a CVT that gets the job done. As you may know, the all-wheel-drive system is standard and is among the most effective in the world.

Weak Points

There is clearly a lack of a performance version or an electrified option in the Forester lineup. The model is starting to show its age.

Strengths

It's a comfortable, enjoyable-to-drive, and highly competent vehicle. The Forester doesn't lack anything in terms of equipment, especially regarding safety. Its all-wheel-drive system is remarkably efficient.

Signature Element

Cars are often an emotional affair. Thus, I take this opportunity to talk about one of my industry favorites, the Wilderness version of the Forester. Its off-road capabilities are impressive. In fact, the Forester Wilderness can give a run for their money to vehicles like the Jeep Wrangler and the Ford Bronco.

Closing Thoughts

The Subaru Forester might not be the first name that comes to mind when talking about compact SUVs. Some models sell better for various reasons. Nevertheless, the Japanese manufacturer's SUV has every reason to appeal, making it one of the most logical purchases in the segment. Believe me, once you've experienced its all-wheel-drive system, you won't want to go without it.
