It’s fair to say that Subaru stole the show from other automakers this year at the New York International Auto Show with several major unveilings, including the highly anticipated new generation of the legendary Outback.
The automaker chose to offer the popular Wilderness version right from the model’s launch—something that wasn't the case with the previous generation. In fact, it was this variant that was under the cover in New York during the official presentation, drawing even more attention.
A Bold Look
I must say I really like the direction Subaru has taken in recent years with more angular designs that make its vehicles look like big toys on four wheels. It’s a very popular trend right now, and it’s a style that the new Outback pulls off quite well.
The new Subaru Outback is boxier and more imposing than the previous generation. The Japanese automaker’s car now looks more like an SUV—which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
The Japanese brand’s wagon isn’t just sporting a tougher look. Its roof can support a load of 363 kilograms with its roof rails, which is well above average.
Modern and Comfortable
The cabin is just as spacious as before, but the design has been significantly updated. We're welcomed by a 12.1-inch screen for the infotainment system and a 12.3-inch digital dashboard. Subaru has made numerous tech upgrades, including a new process that dramatically increases the speed of the digital interface. All of this comes standard across all trims.
The Japanese wagon also features the latest version of the EyeSight system, which allows the vehicle to reach speeds of up to 135 km/h on the highway without the driver needing to hold the steering wheel.
Two Powertrains
The 2026 Subaru Outback offers two mechanical options, starting with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 180 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. The Japanese wagon also offers a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, delivering 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. In both cases, a CVT transmission and all-wheel drive come standard.
We don’t yet know the pricing range for the 2026 Subaru Outback. However, regardless of the price, I believe the model will be very popular once it hits dealerships.
