Safety & Engineering

Confidence in motion: The next chapter

From the very start, Subaru has placed an emphasis on engineering vehicles that offer superior levels of safety and security through the use of the most advanced active and passive safety systems available. This dedication has led to vehicles such as the 2013 Subaru BRZ – vehicles that strike the perfect balance between performance and safety, generating confidence on every type of road, under all possible conditions and at all times.

Always on alert

Superb agility, superior visibility, powerful braking and class-leading driver support systems: These are the elements that comprise the active safety solution for the Subaru BRZ and provide the tools needed to avoid an accident at all cost.

Multi-mode Vehicle Stability Control and Traction Control System (TCS)
Standard on all models, the Vehicle Stability Control system employs an array of sensors to monitor steering input, braking input and yaw angle at all times and offers no fewer than five different driver-selectable modes, including Sport Mode and a TSC-off switch. This range of choice allows you to tailor the level of control to suit the conditions and to support your desire to push the car to its limits.
Braking Systems
The ABS incorporates the latest thinking on brake performance and delivers class-leading levels of control and safety. Electronic Brake-force Distribution automatically adjusts brake pressure front-to-back according to vehicle loads. Brake Assist delivers added brake pressure in panic-stop situations. Brake Override cuts engine power when the brakes are applied. And large ventilated discs on all four corners provide superior stopping power in all conditions.

Engineered to protect

In the event that an accident is unavoidable, the Subaru BRZ is equipped with a comprehensive range of passive safety features to help ensure the protection of all occupants. For example, new high-strength front seats that better protect against whiplash injuries in a rear-end collision.

Next-generation Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frame
The pursuit of high degrees of safety and sports driving performance has led to the next generation of this class-leading design that links together the roof, door beams, side pillars and floor. More robust than ever, the design now incorporates 53% high-tensile strength steel for superior crashworthiness without adding unnecessary weight and creates a 360-degree barrier of protection by diverting impact energy away from the cabin.
A full complement of airbags represents one of the first stages of defense in the event of a collision. The Subaru BRZ features dual-stage deployment front airbags, seat-mounted side-impact airbags and side-curtain airbags for front and rear passengers.

Safety and Security

Purpose-built engineering

The engineers at Subaru began with a clean sheet of paper and an all-new platform. The objective: To create a lightweight sports coupe with perfect balance, precise handling, quick steering, a comfortable ride perfect for everyday driving and one of the lowest centres of gravity of any production vehicle in the world. Mission accomplished: The meticulously engineered 2013 Subaru BRZ is all about the connection between the driver and the car, and the car and the road.

Built from the ground up and exclusive to the Subaru BRZ, the all-new 2.0L DOHC SUBARU BOXER incorporates next-generation technologies to deliver free-revving performance and remarkable efficiency. The engine features direct and port fuel injection for instant response throughout the rev range, and a very special Sound Creator that enhances the engine note for even more thrills. The result: A sports car engine that pulls to 7,000 rpm, sounds like a mechanical symphony, and delivers stellar fuel efficiency and clean-burning performance.

Transmissions + RWD

The combination of the rear-wheel drive layout and the choice of two sport-minded transmissions gives the Subaru BRZ tremendous response on the road. The 6-speed Manual Transmission (6MT) and 6-speed Automatic Transmission (6AT) are compact, set low in the chassis for optimum handling and tuned for crisp performance.

6-speed Manual Transmission (6MT)
The 6MT is a short-throw transmission with close gear ratios for true sports car performance. The gearshift is positioned for quick and smooth operation, while the overall feel of the linkage is one of solidity and precision. The first five gears provide the thrills, while sixth is a true overdrive gear for heightened fuel efficiency.
6-speed Automatic Transmission (6AT)
The 6AT is no less sporting than its manual counterpart. For example, the transmission features automatic throttle blipping on downshifts, a Sport Mode and a Manual Mode with steering-wheel integrated paddle shifters that is 30% more responsive than the Normal Mode. Tuned for crisp response, the 6AT enables powerful acceleration at low engine speeds and superior fuel efficiency at higher speeds.

Cutting-edge chassis carves turns

A purebred, lightweight, rear-wheel-drive sports car slices through turns like a razor blade and gives the driver a dynamic sense of connection with the road, the feeling that every movement of the steering wheel will bring about the desired result.

Lightweight Body

The key to any great sports car is not its power, but its power-to-weight ratio. Right from the start, the goal in developing the Subaru BRZ was to build a lightweight sports car to ensure a lower centre of gravity, crisp handling characteristics, quick and responsive steering, class-leading safety standards and, yes, a superior power-to-weight ratio. Lightweight, high-tensile strength steel has been used liberally, the hood is made of aluminum and everything under the hood has been positioned to create a supremely low centre of gravity.

Front suspension

The MacPherson front suspension system features stabilizer bars and a strut brace for greater stability and direct, sharp response. This set-up – combined with the car's very wide track and the low-slung ground clearance of 125 mm – contributes to the incredible handling characteristics of the Subaru BRZ.

Rear suspension

The double-wishbone rear suspension utilizes the architecture of the high performance Subaru WRX STI and includes stabilizer bars for a smoother ride and a truly planted feeling, especially when cornering. The lightweight and stiff design is the perfect solution for ensuring constant contact with the road.
