Don’t Forget – It’s Almost Time To Take Off Your Winter Tires!

Remove Winter Tires

Once temperatures reach a steady 7 degrees or above, it’s time to get them off! At temp’s above 7, the pavement starts to get hot. This heat can wear down and eat away at the soft rubber of your winter tires. This means they’ll wear faster, and need to be replaced sooner. Which you definitely don’t want to have to do. So if you want to keep these tires for as long as possible, keep an eye on the forecast and get them off as soon as the weather starts to change! (Oakville forecast: Late April-Early May)

Driving Performance to Achieve Enhanced Dynamic Feel

The new Impreza incorporated a number of improvements to achieve enhanced dynamic feel. This translates into a secure and comfortable feel for the driver. This setup realizes a dynamic quality based on the thorough and precise analysis of the steering and pedal feedback, vehicle behavior, vibration and noise, and other elements the driver senses., This far surpasses its class as befitting this first in a new generation of the Subaru lineup.

Body & Chassis
  • The new platform dramatically increases rigidity throughout the body and chassis (a 70% to 100% increase over present models). It also incorporates substantial improvements to the suspension system and achieve a lower center of gravity. This brings about a highly responsive steering that allows drivers to control the vehicle precisely as they want. The eradication of unnecessary movement in handling offers superior straight-line stability and cornering performance to grip the road surface.
  • Optimized frame structure and stronger joints between parts allow the new platform to improve overall torsional rigidity by 70% over present models. This distributes the resonance and distortion throughout the body, greatly reducing vibrations from the steering wheel, floor, and seats. It achieves a quietness that goes beyond vehicle class.
  • The new platform increases the rigidity of the suspension mounting. This improves the absorption of the suspension without warping the body of the car. It also provides a smooth and comfortable drive. By mounting the rear stabilizer directly to the body, the new platform reduces the body roll of the vehicle by 50% compared to present models.
  • Active Torque Vectoring enhances turning and steering performance.
Power Unit
  • Around 80% of the parts on the FB 2.0-liter direct-injection Boxer engine employed on the new Impreza have been completely revamped compared with previous naturally aspirated engines. This makes the new engine lighter to deliver more power and fuel economy.
  • The improved Lineartronic greatly enhances ratio coverage and lightness to boost acceleration performance and fuel economy. It employs full auto-step shift control and the Impreza features a 7-speed manual mode function that allows the driver to accelerate as desired.
  • Noise and vibration are greatly reduced on both the engine and transmission, for more pleasant sounds and a dynamic feel.
World-Class Safety

Subaru’s safety performance has continuously been highly rated by third-party organizations. The new 2017 Subaru Impreza has adopted technologies to further enhance its safety. These technologies include the new platform and the advanced preventive safety system.

  • The new platform achieves a center of gravity that is 5 mm lower than present models. There have been major improvements in rigidity and the evolution of the suspension system. This lower center of gravity offers outstanding hazard avoidance capabilities on a level with a high-performance sports car.
  • Thanks to a frame structure that enables more efficient energy absorption in the event of collision. Enhanced body strength is a result of the increased use of high-tensile steel plates including materials formed by the hot press method. This impacts energy absorption is improved by 40% over present models.
  • EyeSight, Subaru’s innovative and highly acclaimed driver assist technology, delivers extremely reliable preventive safety and reduces driver burdens. It does this through features such as Pre-Collision Braking Control, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Lane Keep Assist function.
  • The new High Beam Assist employs an EyeSight stereo camera. This automatically switches from high to low beam according to what is happening ahead of the vehicle. Steering Responsive Headlights moves the beam right or left when turning at corners and intersections. This illuminates the direction of travel. The Impreza employs the two headlight controls for the first time, dramatically improving nighttime visibility and recognition capabilities of EyeSight.
  • The 2017 Subaru Impreza has newly adopted an automatic braking system for reversing. When the vehicle is reversing, a sensor inside the rear bumper detects obstacles and alerts the driver for possible collisions. If that driver fails to act, the system automatically brakes to prevent a collision or reduce damage.
  • The Impreza newly employs blind spot detection and reversing assistance to enhance all-round preventive safety.

Benefits Of Proper Tire Inflation

There are actually a lot of things that you can do to save money and improve the longevity your tires. Unfortunately, not all drivers know about these simple tips for vehicle maintenance. When tires are not inflated to the pounds per square inch (PSI) rating recommended by manufacturers, they are less round and require more energy to begin moving and to maintain speed. As such, under-inflated tires do consume a little more energy and fuel. Proper tire inflation in all four tires provides better safety and efficiency on the road. Here are a few reasons to keep your tires properly inflated.

Tire Inflation Benefits

Benefits Of Proper Tire Inflation | Budds' Subaru

Get Better Mileage With Properly Inflated Tires

An informal study by students at Carnegie Mellon University found that the majority of cars on U.S. roads are operating on tires inflated to only 80 percent of capacity. According to the website, fueleconomy.gov, proper tire inflation can improve mileage by about 3.3 percent, whereas leaving them under-inflated can lower mileage by 0.4 percent for every one PSI drop in pressure of all four tires.

Fully Inflated Tires are Safer

Besides saving fuel and money and minimizing emissions, proper tire inflation is safer and less likely to fail at high speeds. Under-inflated tires make for longer stopping distances and will skid longer on wet surfaces. Properly inflated tires will last longer as they wear more evenly.

Less Wear on Tires

It’s also true that good tire pressure means tires won’t wear out as quickly. Along with other tire tips like tire rotation, alignment and balancing, keeping tire pressure accurate will decrease the issue of “bad wear patterns,” where some parts of the tire can get worn down quickly. Good tire pressure also provides better handling in a vehicle. When tire pressure is low, on the other hand, the risk of some kinds of accidents can increase. When the vehicle is not as able to maintain traction on the road, driving gets generally more dangerous.

How to Extend Your Tire Life

In order to ensure maximum tire life, you have to perform regular tire maintenance. There are a few very quick things that you can do to extend your tire life and there are things you should do when the car is stopped or has been sitting for any length of time.

1. Daily Inspections

Every time you walk out to your car, you should be looking around it to make sure nothing that can damage them has been placed or blown near your tires. This includes nails, glass and other sharp objects.

2. Monthly Inspections

Mechanics advise drivers to check their tire pressure monthly, if not more frequently. The correct air pressure for tires that come with new vehicles can be found either in the owner’s manual or inside the driver-side door. Remember, that replacement tires may carry a different PSI rating than the originals that came with the car. Almost all tires however, state the correct PSI on the outer sidewall. Also, tire pressure should be checked before heading out on the road for the day, to avoid inaccurate readings.

3. Driving Precautions

Tires are designed to live through some rough treatment. This doesn’t mean that you can drive over those two-foot-wide potholes at top speed. If you can safely avoid them, do so. Next to manufacturing defects and accidents, hitting potholes at speed is the most common cause of premature tire failure.

4. Alignment

Improper setting of your vehicle’s suspension alignment can lead to increased fuel usage, uneven tire tread wear and difficulty maintaining a straight course. Your alignment should be checked every 1-2 years depending on the condition of the roads and your driving habits. Wheels that are improperly aligned won’t always be pointing in the desired direction, causing a condition known as ‘scrubbing,’ where the tires are scrubbed across the surface of the road like a piece of wood across sandpaper, causing increased and uneven wear. If you change your tires for the season, it’s not a bad idea to get it checked then!

5. Regular Rotation

In order to correct for uneven wear patterns induced by road and driving conditions, your tires should be rotated every 10,000 to 15,000km. Regular and consistent tire rotation will distribute any uneven tire wear equally, which will allow you more time to correct any issues.

Hopefully these tips can save you some wear and tear on your tires. Don’t forget, our Service Department is always more than happy to assist with any service or wear related questions, so don’t hesitate to call or stop in!

Winter Tires – Are They Really That Big Of A Deal?

The days are getting shorter and colder, you’ve started to pull out the hats and mittens. But it’s not snowing yet so you’re wondering, do you really need to invest in winter tires? You’ve got all-seasons, is there really a difference?

Absolutely – to both. While they may be a bit of an upfront investment, the pros far outweigh the cost of purchasing them. We’ve outlined some of the benefits, and debunked some of the myths of installing winter tires on your vehicle.

Winter Tires | Budds' Subaru

They Are Not The Same As All Seasons

On all season, or any type of non winter tires, rubber becomes inflexible and brittle at temperatures below 7◦C. This is why all seasons stop gripping and start sliding once they hit these levels of coldness. Winter tires are made with a softer compound allowing them to stay flexible and grip when you’re on slippery roads – allowing for better control of your vehicle.

The Tread Is Thicker

Winter tires have different – and thicker tread patterns then all season or summer tires do. The thicker tread allows for a better grip and traction. The tread patterns also aim to funnel water, slush and snow out from under the tires so there is still road for the tires to grip on.

Should Be Put On By Early November, Off Again In Spring

Keep an eye on the long term forecast, and schedule and installation appointment accordingly. They should be put on as soon as temperatures reach about 7◦C. Also come spring, they need to be taken off as soon as temperatures rise to above 7◦C. Keeping them on past when they are needed while harm the tires. The softer rubber compound will get eaten up by hot pavement temperatures once spring rolls around.

Insurance Discounts

Effective January 1, 2016, the Ontario government will require all private insurers to offer discounts to people who buy and install winter tires, the Ministry of Finance said in a release. Although we do not know what the discount will be, most current insurers are offering an average of 5%.

Stopping Distance

In sedans at speeds of 10 miles per hour, winter tires can make an 8-foot difference in stopping distances. That’s about half a car length, or the difference between your front bumper being nicely behind the car ahead or buried into its trunk. At 30 mph, the distance grows exponentially, to 63 feet (4 car lengths.) For SUV’s with all-wheel drive the results were pretty much the same: 7 feet to stop from 10 mph and 56 (that’s 3 1/2car lengths) from 30 mph.

The above are just a few of the reasons why getting winter tires is a must. If you’re not sure what kind to get, click here for the Automobiles Protection Associations top rated winter tires

Remember though, winter tires are not the only thing keeping you safe on the road. Remember to always drive according to weather conditions, give appropriate space and be alert. Stay safe this winter!
