Introducing The 2017 Subaru Impreza!

World Premiere at New York International Auto Show
All-New 2017 Subaru Impreza

Tokyo, March 24, 2016 – Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), the manufacturer of Subaru automobiles, unveiled the all-new 2017 Subaru Impreza (North American specifications) at the 2016 New York International Auto Show.

The fifth-generation Impreza employs the completely revamped Subaru Global Platform architecture for the first time. It significantly enhances the body and chassis rigidity and strength. The 2017 Subaru Impreza also offers world-class collision safety and hazard avoidance performance. As well, it has far more driver-responsive handling and ride comfort.

Subaru Global Platform Gives Peace Of Mind

The new Subaru Global Platform, together with Subaru’s core technologies such as the newly developed 2.0-liter direct injection Boxer engine, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD), and EyeSight driver assist system, represents a major advance in Subaru’s delivery of “enjoyment and peace of mind” for customers as the foundation of the next generation of Subaru vehicles.

Dynamic & Solid Design Philosophy

The Impreza is the first production model to fully incorporate the company’s DYNAMIC x SOLID design philosophy. It also features a greatly enhanced interior and exterior finish as a next-generation C segment model that far surpasses its class.

The company plans to switch production for the North American Impreza from Japan to the United States at Subaru of Indiana Automotive. The first units will roll off the line in late 2016.

Subaru New Design Language and Its Signature Functionalities

The all-new Impreza further enhances its functionalities while fully incorporating the company’s DYNAMIC x SOLID design philosophy as the first production model. It also features a high-quality interior and exterior finish.

  • The Subaru look is seen in the Wide & Low stance with its sporty impression, and in the unified three-dimensional structure extending from the hexagonal grille that symbolizes the Subaru identity to the hawk-eye headlights. The front face plays the role of starting point from which the front flows via the sides to the rear, with each part uniting into a solid form.
  • The rich inflection of the character line extending from the front fender to the door panels and rear shoulder, and the line rising energetically toward the rear from the lower door panel, give dynamism to the solid body surface. The powerfully extended fender flares express the reliability of Subaru All-Wheel Drive.
  • The rear combination lights sharing the same motif as the headlights express a Wide & Low stance similar to the front. The sedan body’s sleek styling from cabin toward trunk lid enhances the sporty impression. On the 5-Door body, a tightened cabin through the rear combination lamps and powerful looking shoulder silhouette enhance the sporty impression of the nimble 5-Door style.
  • The new model also combines the Subaru performance essentials of superior aerodynamics and visibility with advanced styling.
  • The combination of sporty and advanced design and sophisticated construction delivers an interior that far surpasses its class. The spacious design flows from the instrument panel through the door trim for a feeling of refinement.
  • The seats’ structures that are made more fitting to the bodies of passengers have been revamped to far surpass the quality of its class.
  • In the center of the instrument panel is an 8.0-inch touch-screen display for the infotainment system, which can connect with Apple CarPlay™, Android Auto, and other setups. Detailed stitching on the instrument panel complements the quality feel.
  • In addition to the enhanced interior design, signature Subaru functionalities have been further strengthened including the excellent all-round visibility, spacious cabin, and cargo room.

Driving Performance to Achieve Enhanced Dynamic Feel

The new Impreza incorporated a number of improvements to achieve enhanced dynamic feel. This translates into a secure and comfortable feel for the driver. This setup realizes a dynamic quality based on the thorough and precise analysis of the steering and pedal feedback, vehicle behavior, vibration and noise, and other elements the driver senses., This far surpasses its class as befitting this first in a new generation of the Subaru lineup.

Body & Chassis
  • The new platform dramatically increases rigidity throughout the body and chassis (a 70% to 100% increase over present models). It also incorporates substantial improvements to the suspension system and achieve a lower center of gravity. This brings about a highly responsive steering that allows drivers to control the vehicle precisely as they want. The eradication of unnecessary movement in handling offers superior straight-line stability and cornering performance to grip the road surface.
  • Optimized frame structure and stronger joints between parts allow the new platform to improve overall torsional rigidity by 70% over present models. This distributes the resonance and distortion throughout the body, greatly reducing vibrations from the steering wheel, floor, and seats. It achieves a quietness that goes beyond vehicle class.
  • The new platform increases the rigidity of the suspension mounting. This improves the absorption of the suspension without warping the body of the car. It also provides a smooth and comfortable drive. By mounting the rear stabilizer directly to the body, the new platform reduces the body roll of the vehicle by 50% compared to present models.
  • Active Torque Vectoring enhances turning and steering performance.
Power Unit
  • Around 80% of the parts on the FB 2.0-liter direct-injection Boxer engine employed on the new Impreza have been completely revamped compared with previous naturally aspirated engines. This makes the new engine lighter to deliver more power and fuel economy.
  • The improved Lineartronic greatly enhances ratio coverage and lightness to boost acceleration performance and fuel economy. It employs full auto-step shift control and the Impreza features a 7-speed manual mode function that allows the driver to accelerate as desired.
  • Noise and vibration are greatly reduced on both the engine and transmission, for more pleasant sounds and a dynamic feel.
World-Class Safety

Subaru’s safety performance has continuously been highly rated by third-party organizations. The new 2017 Subaru Impreza has adopted technologies to further enhance its safety. These technologies include the new platform and the advanced preventive safety system.

  • The new platform achieves a center of gravity that is 5 mm lower than present models. There have been major improvements in rigidity and the evolution of the suspension system. This lower center of gravity offers outstanding hazard avoidance capabilities on a level with a high-performance sports car.
  • Thanks to a frame structure that enables more efficient energy absorption in the event of collision. Enhanced body strength is a result of the increased use of high-tensile steel plates including materials formed by the hot press method. This impacts energy absorption is improved by 40% over present models.
  • EyeSight, Subaru’s innovative and highly acclaimed driver assist technology, delivers extremely reliable preventive safety and reduces driver burdens. It does this through features such as Pre-Collision Braking Control, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Lane Keep Assist function.
  • The new High Beam Assist employs an EyeSight stereo camera. This automatically switches from high to low beam according to what is happening ahead of the vehicle. Steering Responsive Headlights moves the beam right or left when turning at corners and intersections. This illuminates the direction of travel. The Impreza employs the two headlight controls for the first time, dramatically improving nighttime visibility and recognition capabilities of EyeSight.
  • The 2017 Subaru Impreza has newly adopted an automatic braking system for reversing. When the vehicle is reversing, a sensor inside the rear bumper detects obstacles and alerts the driver for possible collisions. If that driver fails to act, the system automatically brakes to prevent a collision or reduce damage.
  • The Impreza newly employs blind spot detection and reversing assistance to enhance all-round preventive safety.

Two New Concepts To Debut At The Tokyo Motor Show

Subaru has been growing steadily for years now in U.S. sales, and they’re looking to push those numbers even higher by showing off concepts for a new Impreza wagon and full-size SUV at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show.

Two New Concepts Debut

New Concepts Debut At Tokyo Motor Show | Budds' Subaru

Full-Size SUV Concept

The full size SUV is set to be Subaru’s newest attempt at a full-size “lifestyle” sports-utility-vehicle. This should make every “weekend adventurer” come running from the hills. Subaru isn’t making this Subaru SUV. It’s called the VISIV concept, it previews Subaru’s new platform (along with the Impreza concept). The SUV features a turbo-engine hybrid set up with the use of electric motors offering the brand’s famous 4WD setup. It will be without the annoying hump for the prop-shaft running through the interior.

Subaru is also upping its safety image with the VISIV concept featuring an active automatic braking system, surround-view radar sensors, vehicle-to-infrastructure communication, as well as automated parking.

Impreza 5-Door Hatchback Concept

The Impreza 5-door hatchback concept previews a refresh of the current model – which isn’t all that old. From the current sketch images, it appears to grab some of the “design DNA” of the brand from the current WRX’s concept car a few years ago. It has squared off headlights and taillights in the sketch look bold. The car shares the exaggerated rear-hump of the WRX. The steeply sloped roofline promises something slightly sexier than the current model. All these improvements are exciting enough, though there is no word yet about whether there are plans to revive a 5-door WRX or STI, or even transmission possibilities, though a manual is offered on the current generation.

The concept cars should be brought to reality in late October, which is TMS opens its doors for the show. The new Impreza hatch should show up around late 2016, with the new full-size SUV following to follow. The new platform on the Impreza will also show up in the entire lineup through model refreshes over the next few years. Subaru also promises direct-injection on all engines. It also promises cylinder deactivation and leaner combustion by 2016. Let’s not forget the plan for its first plug-in hybrid model to show up in 2018.

The ultimate goal is to achieve over one million vehicle sales in a fiscal year by 2021. Subaru is right on track.

2015 Subaru Impreza Safety | Budds' Subaru

The Subaru safety standards you’ve come to expect as an annual IIHS Top Safety Pick, are in the form of dual-stage front airbags, driver knee airbag, side-impact front airbags, side-curtain airbags and more. The new Impreza will also now feature a backup camera with all models. For the first time, Subaru’s EyeSight adaptive cruise-control and collision-avoidance technology, will be available for the Impreza (see video).

Also new in 2015, is the addition of the Partial Zero-Emission Vehicle (PZEV) rated 2.0-litre SUBARU BOXER engine (PZEV refers to emission quality). The engine will produce 148 horsepower at 6,200 rpm. Not only are you saving the environment, you’re saving plenty of fuel as well. The Impreza will continue to deliver the best fuel economy of any gas-powered all-wheel drive passenger car available: now 8.5L/100km, 6.4L/100km highway, and 7.59L/100km combined. For perspective, The Impreza has better fuel-efficiency than the Ford Focus and the Kia Forte, both of which are 2-wheel drive.
